Touch screens still cost a bundle. I love the technology behind them, but a cheaper alternative is the use of Smart Boards that have been around for a while. They allow for you to digitally write on them with "smart pens"so that it it can feel like you are using the old plastic overlays on a map.
Not a bad solution if you are looking to move forward technologically from the grease pencil days.

May I also add that frequent training must accompany these "smart boards." I would try to include them in as many trainings and/or exercises as possible. When you get EOC staff that does not generally work with this technology they can easily become "dumb boards" and inhibit the ability to get work done.
Not knowing a lot about smart board I am sure they have a place in emergency management. But I would think that for the cost involved for one, you could get a very good touch screen laptop and projector. You could still write on the laptop screen and retain the info and still have all of your applications that you would need. Just like all parts of government we as Emergency Managers need to become more aware of costs and try to get the most bang for our very, very small buck.....
You can get even cheaper if you already have the projector
